Making A Good Start To The New Year

Malachi 1:1-2
As we move into the New Year, here are some wonderful words from the beginning of the final book of the Old Testament: '"I have loved you" says the Lord' (Malachi 1:2). This is a great message from the Lord. Let's make a good start to the New Year. Let God's love reach your heart, change your life and flow out from you in blessing to others.

A New Beginning With God, His Word And His Spirit

Genesis 1:1-3

'Genesis' means 'beginning'. Its opening verses challenge us to get our priorities right.
(a) the priority of God (1)
God comes first. Before anyone else is mentioned, He is there.
(b) the priority of God's Word (3)
God is the first to speak. Before any human word is spoken, there is the Word of the Lord.
(c) the priority of God's Spirit (2)
All was 'empty', all was 'darkness', yet 'the Spirit of God' was at
work, and transformation was set in motion.
Here, we have God's priorities, set out in the first three verses of the Bible. Putting God first and listening to His Word, we are to pray for the moving of God's Spirit, 'hovering over' our lives to transform them. For those who make God's priorities their own, there is a promise of great blessing (Psalm 1:1-2). It is the great blessing of knowing Jesus Christ, our Saviour, as 'God with us' (Matthew 1:23).

Happy New Year To All

May your new year be blessed, filled with the love of God, peace and blessings overflowing.

Let Us Go To Bethlehem (2)

In our study of Christ’s birth , we don’t want to be seen simply as ‘those narrow-minded people who believe in the virgin birth’. We want to be “children of God”, “born of God”, people whose depth of spiritual experience and quality of Christian living marks us out as Christ’s men and women. We are concerned that the Bible’s teaching concerning Christ’s birth is taken seriously. We are also concerned that, in our lives, the fruits of new birth will be seen. With a view to encouraging spiritual growth, let us take a journey to Bethlehem. (a) It is a journey through history. Bethlehem was not Christ’s beginning. We go back to the Old Testament prophets. we go beyond them into eternity, recalling Jesus’ words, “before Abraham was born, I am” (John 8:58). (b) It is a journey to the Cross. Bethlehem was not the end of Christ’s journey. At Bethlehem, we are invited to continue with Christ on His journey to the Cross. From the Cross, we go on to discover Christ - risen, exalted and returning. (c) It is a journey into our own lives. In this personal journey, we are invited to explore our new relationship with God through Christ. We are guided by the ’star’ of Holy Scripture - “a lamp to our feet and a light to our path” (Psalm 119:105) - which leads us to Christ.

Let Us Go To Bethlehem (1)

Some tell us that we should not take seriously what the Bible says about the virgin birth of Christ. Let it be clear from the outset. Our purpose is not to stand in judgment of God’s Word - as if we had the right to say what should be believed and what should be discarded! We rejoice in the fact of His coming - “to you is born this day … a Saviour who is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:11). We rejoice in the manner of His coming - He was born of a virgin. First and foremost, we rejoice in the purpose of His coming. He has come to be our Saviour. He has come to provide salvation for us. He is God with us, “Immanuel” (Matthew 1:23). He is God for us - He died for us as our Substitute (Isaiah 53). He is God in us - “Christ in you” (Colossians 1:27).

"I Have A Dream" (2).

In the 1960s, Martin Luther King Jr. spoke the memorable words, "I have a dream." Was he to be dismissed as a dreamer, living in a dreamworld? - No! His "influence and leadership during the troubled 1960s may have saved America from a bloody racial civil war." "He did more than any other individual of the 20th century to make black emancipation a political and social fact in modern America." Are we - in the first decade of the 21st century - dreaming when we dream of better things for Christ in our congregations and communities? - Yes! We are dreamers - but let's remember this: dreams have a way of becoming reality when we take them seriously and act upon them!

"I Have A Dream" (1).

In the first two chapters of Matthew's Gospel, there are three angelic messages addressed to Joseph. They are messages of invitation (1:20-21), protection (2:13) and victory (2:20). What is God saying to us from these three angelic messages ? - He speaks to us concerning Jesus. He invites us to take Him as our Saviour. He calls us to rise to the challenge of living the life of victory. The second and third angelic messages begin with the word, "Rise." In the story of Joseph, the word "rise" follows on from the word "dream". Many people look at the Christmas story with disdain. They despise all this talk of angels. They dismiss it as something from long ago, something which has no relevance for today's world. They would read the story of Joseph and say, "What's all this talk about dreams? You don't expect me to take this seriously." Such people refuse to believe the Christmas story. it is too other-worldly for them. They would write off Joseph as a dreamer, living in a dreamland. Joseph had some fascinating dreams, but he did not live in a dreamland. His dreams changed the way he lived his life in the real world. His dreams had a life-changing effect.

The Victory (Matthew 2:20)

The third angelic message is a declaration of victory. The angel comes with this message - "those who sought the child are dead" (Matthew 2:20). This is a declaration of victory. the enemy has been defeated. Now, the short-term measure of rehousing in Egypt is no longer necessary. God's purpose of salvation can move forward with the return of His Son to the land of Israel. To Joseph, God says, "go to the land of Israel". God's purpose is moving on. We must move with Him. we are to move in His victory.

The Protection (Matthew 2:13)

God protects Joseph, Mary and Jesus. We can be more specific. God protects Jesus. Joseph and Mary are part of God's protection plan. They are instruments of God's protection. God's protection of Jesus takes the form of a 'moonlight flitting'. God protects Jesus by relocating Him. Jesus' first change of address comes very early in life. God tells Joseph where he is to take Mary and Jesus - "take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt (2:13). God will tell Joseph how long they are to stay in Egypt - "remain there till I tell you". This was not to be a long-term move. It was to be a short-term move. They were only to stay in Egypt until the time of danger was over. Joseph had taken Jesus to be not only his son but also his Saviour. Now, Joseph had to look after Jesus as He grew up. There is a lesson for us here also. It's a lesson concerning spiritual growth. we are to take care of Jesus. We are to treasure Him. We are to let Him grow up in our lives. Being a Christian is not only becoming a Christian. It is not only the initial decision. There is the life to be lived. There is the life-long process of spiritual growth. In the life of Jesus, Joseph is in the background. He does not come out of the background. Jesus is in the foreground. Joseph is in the background. This is the way it must be with us. Jesus is in the foreground. we are in the background. Joseph did not compete with Jesus. He gave all the glory to Jesus - not only as his son but also as his Saviour. This is how it must be with us. There can be no glory for ourselves. the glory belongs to Jesus.

The Invitation (Matthew 1:20-21)

Joseph is invited to involve himself in God's purpose of salvation. It is emphasized that this is God's work. It is supernatural. It is not the work of man. It is the work of God. Joseph is not required to do anything in the way of procreation. He has simply to acknowledge what God has done - "that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit" (Matthew 1:20). There is nothing for Joseph to accomplish. There is only one thing he can do. he must acknowledge the mighty miracle of God. Here, Joseph is faced with an invitation to which he must give his reply. he is invited to take Mary as his wife. In taking Mary as his wife - not only as his son but also as his Saviour. Here, we have the Good News of Christ. Here, we have God's Word to us. - God has given His Son to us. - God invites us to take Jesus as our Saviour.

Invitation, Protection, Victory (Matthew 1-2)

In the first two chapters of Matthew's Gospel, there are three angelic messages addressed to Joseph. They are messages of invitation (1:20-21), protection (2:13) and victory (2:20).

The full revelation of Christ’s glory is still to come. Let it begin in us now.

God is in control! Jesus was born in Bethlehem. Long before it happened, God had it planned (Luke 2:1-7; Micah 5:2-3).

As we approach Christ's Return, God still has His plan. He is still in control.

The birth of Christ is not merely an event from the past. It is also a message for the future.

We look back so that we can move forward.

We are fearful about many things. ‘What's the world coming to?’, we ask. God turns our question on its head: ‘Christ is coming to the world’.

From His first coming, we look on to His Second Coming - He ‘will come to all the people’(Luke 2:10): ‘every eye will see Him’(Revelation 1:7).

His Return invites us to ask another question: ‘when the Son of man comes, will He find faith on earth?’(Luke 18:8).

For you, is it still ‘before Christ’? Let the ‘new age’ begin: Let Christ be ‘born this day’(Luke 2:11) - in your heart!

Christ Is Coming In Glory. Christ Is Preparing Us For Glory.

We read in Titus 2:11,13 of Christ’s coming in grace- ‘the grace of God has appeared for the salvation of all people’- and His coming in glory- ‘we wait for the blessed hope - the glorious appearing of our great God and Saviour, Jesus Christ’. From grace to glory - This is the journey from Christ’s first coming to His Second Coming.

It is also the journey of our life of faith. We begin with the forgiveness of our sins. our final destination is glory, heavenly and eternal glory, the glory of God. We live by the grace of God. We look forward to the glory of God.

God wants us to live as ‘a people of His own who are zealous for good deeds’(Titus 2:14). If we are to be ‘zealous for good deeds’, we must first be zealous for Jesus Christ. Do good - but never forget, ‘He saved us - not because of deeds done by us...’(Titus 3:8, 4-6).

Christ: King Of Glory, King of love - May The Glory Of His Love Shine In Us.

‘The Lord reigns’ (Psalms 96:10; 97:1). ‘The Lord is King!’

He is not only ‘the King all-glorious above’. He is ‘the King of love’. He is ‘our Maker, Defender, Redeemer and Friend!’

He is not only ‘the King of heaven’. He is ‘the God of grace’. He is ‘the King of mercy’ (Church Hymnary, 35, 36, 388, 360, 86).

His reign is not to be restricted to some faraway heaven. It is not to be a reign that is far removed from the practicalities of our everyday life.

He is to reign in our hearts. He is to reign in every part of our life.

Let His reign of love begin. Let His grace and mercy control all that you do.

We must pray, ‘Reign in me, Sovereign Lord, reign in me’. When we say, ‘Let Your Kingdom come’ and ‘let Your will be done’, we must pray, ‘Captivate my heart. Establish there Your throne’(Mission Praise, 570).

Glory to God In The Highest – Our Saviour Has Come.

The prophecy has been spoken - ‘To us a Child is born, to us a Son is given...’. The prophecy has been fulfilled - ‘Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you: He is Christ the Lord’.

Jesus Christ is our great Saviour. He is our ‘Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace’ (Isaiah 9:6: Luke 2:11).

Jesus Christ has brought to us a great salvation. Through faith in Him, we enter God’s heavenly and eternal ‘Kingdom’ (Isaiah 9:7: Luke 1:30-33).

This is ‘Good News of great joy’- for ‘all the people’, for ‘all generations’.

Let us rejoice in the Lord, as Mary, the mother of Jesus, did - ‘My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour... for the Mighty One has done great things for me...’

Let us join with the angels in saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest...’ (Luke 2:10; 1:46-50; 2:14).

Christ is born: Readings in Luke and Matthew

The Birth of Christ: Readings in Matthew and Luke

Jesus Loves Us So Much More Than We Love Him.

Jesus loves us so much more than we love Him. In love, He comes to us to draw out from us a greater love for Him. I find great encouragement in the story of the restoration of Peter in John 21. Peter had denied the Lord three times. For each denial, Jesus came to Peter with the question, "Peter, do you love Me?" Three times, Peter reaffirmed his love for Jesus. Following on from this, there is the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2) when the Lord works through Peter in a very wonderful way. Three thousand people are brought to faith in Christ - for each denial, a thousand souls brought to faith! What a wonderful restoration! May we have much cause to say of the Lord, "He restores my soul. He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His Name's sake" (Psalm 23:3). May our ministry of His Word prosper - "those who turn many to righteousness shall shine like the stars for ever and ever" (Daniel 12:3).

Learning From Paul - A Man Filled With The Holy Spirit

In his message to the elders at Ephesus, Paul describes his ministry in this way - "I did not shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable, and teaching you in public and from house to house, testifying to both Jews and to Greeks of repentance to God and of faith in our Lord Jesus Christ" (Acts 20:20-21). As he speaks of this Christ-centred ministry, Paul makes it clear that he does not carry out this ministry in his own strength. He speaks of the next step in his missionary journey - "now ... I am going to Jerusalem, bound in the Spirit" (Acts 20:22). We learn from Paul that the Holy Spirit is leading us on to greater things - in the service of Christ. Paul was not content with what he had achieved in the service of Christ. led by the Holy Spirit, Paul was moving on to greater things. This is the way the Holy Spirit is leading us today. We must not rest content. We must go on.

Seek Him

Salvation - The Healing Of Our Whole Life (6)

John 4:43-5:24 (Related reading - Psalm 51:1-19)
As we consider prayerfully the Psalmist's words, we must look away from ourselves to the Lord Jesus Christ. God's purpose is that "all may honour the Son, even as they honour the Father" (John 5:23). To those who imagine that they can worship God without coming, in faith, to the Saviour, the Lord Jesus issues this warning: "He who does not honour the Son does not honour the Father who sent Him" (John 5:23). To each of us, Jesus speaks this word of Gospel promise: "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, he does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life" (John 5:24). Has this great 'miracle' happened in your life? Have you passed from the death of unbelief into the eternal life, which is received by faith?

Salvation - The Healing Of Our Whole Life (5)

John 4:43-5:24 (Related reading - Psalm 51:1-19).
The prayer of the Psalmist, in Psalm 51, may help you to come to know the saving power of the Lord Jesus Christ. Here, we see the Psalmist, confessing his sin to the Lord: "For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against Thee, Thee only, have I sinned, and done that which is evil in Thy sight" (Psalm 51:3-4). We hear the Psalmist, crying to God for salvation: "Hide Thy face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from Thy presence, and take not They Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Thy salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit" (Psalm 51:9-12). We also learn of the Psalmist's prayer that he might be a witness for the Lord: "Then I will teach transgressors Thy ways, and sinners will return to Thee ... my tongue will sing aloud of Thy deliverance. O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall show forth Thy praise" (Psalm 51:13-15).

Salvation - The Healing of Our Whole Life (4)

John 4:43-5:24 (Related reading - Psalm 51:1-19)
When Jesus brings healing, He brings a wholeness of life, which the Bible calls "salvation." Jesus was not only concerned about the man's physical health. He was also concerned about his spiritual welfare. In John 5:14, Jesus said to the healed man, "See, you are well! Sin no more, that nothing worse befall you." You may enjoy good health, but are you saved? - This is the question which the Gospel keeps on pressing home to our hearts. People often say, "The most important thing is your health." The Gospel says, "The most important thing is your salvation." Are you saved? Do you want to be saved? These are the questions God is asking. He waits for your answer.

Salvation - The Healing Of Our Whole Life (3)

When, in John 4:53, we read, "The father knew that was the hour when Jesus had said to him, 'Your son will live'; and he himself believed, and all his household", surely we are reading more than the story of a physical healing. This is the story of salvation. I'm sure that this man would look back on this hour in the same way that John Newton, the author of "Amazing Grace", looked back to his conversion: "'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, and grace my fears relieved. How precious did that grace appear the hour I first believed." Again, in the story of the healing of the man who had been ill for thirty-eight years, there are lessons concerning salvation. When, in John 5:6, Jesus asks the question, "Do you want to be healed?. we must hear, in His question, another question - "Do you want to be saved?"

Salvation - The Healing Of Our Whole Life (2)

John 4:43-5:24 (Related reading - Psalm 51:1-19)
In the two healings, - the boy with the fever and the man who had been ill for thirty-eight years, we learn lessons concerning salvation. The key moment in the healing of the boy is found in John 4:50 - "Jesus said to the boy's father, 'Go; your son will live.' The man believed the word which Jesus spoke to him and went his way." When we hear Jesus saying, "your son will live", do we think only of physical life? Do we not also get a hint of the eternal life which Jesus gives to all who trust Him? When we read the words, "your son will live", we should recall John's purpose in writing this Gospel: "these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His Name" (John 20:31). When we read the words - "The man believed the words that Jesus spoke to him", do we not, again, get the hint of a deeper dimension? Believing the word also involves trusting the Person who speaks the word. we hear the Word of God and we put our trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. This is God's way of bringing us to Himself, God's way of bringing us into a real experience of His salvation.

Salvation - The Healing Of Our Whole Life (1)

John 4:43-5:24 (Related reading - Psalm 51:1-19)
At the heart of our Bible reading from John's Gospel, we have two healings - the healing of a boy suffering from a fever (John 4:46-54) and the healing of a man who had been ill for thirty-eight years (John 5:1-16). In our reading from the Psalms, we have a man crying out to God for spiritual healing - the healing of a life, hardened by sin and guilt. When we come to Jesus' miracles of physical healing, we must learn to look beyond the physical healing. We must seek to learn what God is teaching us concerning the healing of our whole life. What is God saying to us about our salvation in Jesus Christ? - This is the key question we must ask when we read the Bible. Scripture leaves us in no doubt about its central theme - "the Holy Scriptures are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus" (2 Timothy 3:15).

Lessons From Hymns (6)

We move on to Genesis 12:1-3. We read on though the story of Abraham. We learn of the faith of Sarah and the faithfulness of God (Hebrews 11:11-12). We follow the Story on to Christ, who is the fulfilment of the promise given to Abraham (Genesis 12:1-3; Galatians 3:16). This is the Story of ‘the God of Abraham’, the ‘God of love’. Through Christ our Saviour, we will ‘sing the wonders of His grace for ever more’ (Church Hymnary, 358).

Unto Them That Dwell On The Earth

Rev 14:6 And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,

Rev 14:7 Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.

Lessons From Hymns (5)

Genesis 11:1-9
Human pride sets itself up against the authority of God. This is the oft-repeated story of the ‘Tower of Babel’. The end of godless men is sure - ‘Tower and temple, fall to dust’ (Church Hymnary, 405). Sin can be analysed psychologically in terms of the human attitude of proud independence - ‘let us make a name for ourselves’ (5), sociologically in terms of sin’s pervasive influence on a whole society (this was the sin of a whole society), and theologically in terms of the divine judgment which human sin brings upon itself (5-9). What a contrast there is between the Tower of Babel and the great declaration of Proverbs 18:10 - ‘The Name of the Lord is a strong tower’. In Babel there is scattering (9). In the Lord, there is safety - ‘A righteous man runs to it and is safe’. Do not imagine yourself to be strong (Proverbs 18:11). True strength is in Christ alone (1 Corinthians 1:27).

Lessons From Hymns (4)

Expanding on the thought of Genesis 5:29 - ‘this one (Noah) shall bring relief from our work and from the toil of our hands’ - we may allow our thoughts to turn to Christ and say to Him: ‘Not the labour of my hands can fulfil Thy law’s demands…All for sin could not atone, Thou must save, and Thou alone. Nothing in my hand I bring, Simply to Thy Cross I cling’ (Church Hymnary, 83). In these two statements - ‘Noah found grace’ and ‘this one will bring…’, we see both salvation and service. We are saved to serve. Once we ourselves have been found by grace, we are to seek to bring others to Christ that they also may be saved by Him and become His servants.

Lessons From Hymns (3)

Genesis 9:20-29 - What a sad episode this is! It teaches us that yesterday's victories can become today's defeats, if we do not keep close to God. We read, in Hebrews 11:7 of Noah the man of faith, but here we have a very different picture. The lesson is clear - ‘The arm of flesh will fail you; Ye dare not trust your own’. We must not look to our own strength to keep us in the way of faith and obedience. It cannot be done. We fail. ‘God can do anything but fail’. We must affirm our faith in God - ‘All my hope on God is founded’. In man, there is no sure foundation - only ‘change and chance’. There is nothing that will last - ‘only pride of man and earthly glory’ (Church Hymnary, 481,405). Can we be guided through change and chance? Yes, but we must learn from Noah’s fall - Past grace is no guarantee of present growth - , and we must keep our eyes on Jesus, ‘the Author and Finisher of our faith' (Hebrews 12: 2).

Lessons From Hymns (2)

‘When you see a rainbow, remember God is love’. The rainbow reminds us of the gracious promise of God (Genesis 9:13-15). If the love of God is revealed in the rainbow, it is more fully revealed in the Cross: ‘We sing the praise of Him who died, of Him who died upon the Cross... upon the Cross we see in shining letters. ‘God is love’, He bears our sins upon the tree. He brings us mercy from above’. When we read the Old Testament stories, we must learn to see their place within the fuller Story, the Story of God’s salvation: ‘I will sing the wondrous Story of the Christ who died for me’. This is the greatest Story of all - ‘the Story of Jesus and His glory, of Jesus and His love,... the Story of wonderful redemption, God’s remedy for sin’. ‘This is our Story. This is our Song, praising our Saviour all the day long’. This is ‘the Story to tell to the nations’ (Church Hymnary, 258,381,132; Mission Praise, 59,744).

Lessons From Hymns (1)

The story of Noah is the story of God’s grace - ‘Noah found grace’ (Genesis 6:8). Noah lived in very difficult times (Genesis 6:5-7), yet ‘Grace found Noah’. His testimony could be summed up: ‘Amazing grace…I once was lost but now am found’ (Mission Praise, 31).

Don’t Wait Until It’s Too Late. Come To Christ Now!

2 Kings 24:18-25:30
‘Finally, in the end, it came to the point that He cast them out of His presence’(24:20). There is a real word of warning here. God is patient - ‘He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance’(2 Peter 3:9). We dare not presume upon God’s patience: ‘Shall we go on sinning, so that grace may increase? God forbid!’(Romans 6:1-2). There can come a point when God says, ‘This is the point of no return, the end, the final straw’. This is what God’s Word says in Romans 1:21-28 - ‘They did not honour God or give thanks to Him… Therefore God gave them up… They worshipped and served created things rather than the Creator… For this reason God gave them up… Since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up…’. Don’t wait until it’s too late. Come to Christ now!

‘He Who Is In Us Is Greater Than He Who Is In The World.’

2 Kings 23:31-24:17
‘The king of Babylon brought captive to Babylon all the men of valour… all of them strong and fit for war’(24:16). A prisoner of war is taken out of the battle. We have been given ‘the whole armour of God’(Ephesians 6:11,13). We must use‘the weapons of our warfare’. We must ‘take every thought captive to obey Christ’(2 Corinthians 10:3-6). It is not easy to ‘fight the good fight of faith’(1 Timothy 6:12). Satan wants to make us his prisoners of war. Satan is a very powerful enemy - ‘the whole world is in the power of the evil one’. We must live as those who ‘are of God’, firmly convinced that ‘He who is in us is greater than he who is in the world’(1 John 6:19; 1:4). The world seems so strong. The devil seems so powerful. It will not always be so - ‘Hallelujah!’(Revelation 16:19; 18:21; 20:10; 19:1,6-7).

Blessings,

We Need Both - Trust And Obedience.

2 Kings 23:4-30
In 18:5, we read about Hezekiah; ‘There was no one like him among all the kings of Judah, either before him or after him’. Here, we read about something rather different - ‘Neither before nor after Josiah was there a king like him’(25). This seems confusing: Which was the better king - Hezekiah or Josiah? We need to look more closely at these statements. Hezekiah is commended for his trust in the Lord - ‘’Hezekiah trusted in the Lord, the God of Israel’(18:5). Josiah is commended for his obedience to God. His actions were ‘according to all the law of Moses’(25). Trust and obedience belong together. Hezekiah’s faith led to obedience (18:6). By his obedience, Josiah showed that he had ‘turned to the Lord with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his might’(25). We need both - trust and obedience.

Everything Changes When The Word Of God Takes Its Rightful Place Among Us.

2 Kings 21:19-23:3
You never know what’s going to happen next! There was repair work going on at the House of God (5-6). It seemed so mundane. What happened next was certainly not mundane. Revival broke out! A book was found. It was ‘the Book of the Law’(8).The rediscovery of God’s Word brought transformation. Everything changed when the Word of God took its rightful place among the people. King Josiah wanted to find out what was in ‘this book that has been found’ (13). He read its ‘words’ to ‘all the people’(23:2). The words were not only read. They were acted upon: ‘The king… made a covenant before the Lord, to walk after the Lord and to keep His commandments… with all his heart and all his soul… and all the people joined in the covenant’ (23:3). They returned to ‘the ancient paths’, to ‘the good way’(Jeremiah 6:16) - and so must we!

God Is Looking For People Who Will Stand When Everyone Else Is Falling.

2 Kings 20:1-21:18
‘Carried off to Babylon’(20:17) - There’s a real sadness about these words. In Revelation 18:2, Babylon is described as ‘a home for demons and a haunt for every evil spirit’. In today’s world, it seems like things are going the same way. ‘Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great!’(Revelation 14:8; 18:2) - Everything seems to be falling round about us. We hear so much bad news. We wonder, ‘What does God think about all this?’. God is looking for people who will stand when everyone else is falling, people who will stand up for Him - ‘Come out of her, My people, so that you will not share in her sins, so that you will not receive any of her plagues’(Revelation 18:4). Even ‘in Babylon’, there were ‘the chosen’- people who belonged to the Lord (1 Peter 5:13). Let us be such people - ‘in the world’ but ‘not of the world’(John 17:11,16).

We Need To Listen Well If We Are To Hear The Voice Of The Lord In Today’s World.

2 Kings 19:1-37
‘Do not be afraid because of the words you have heard’(6). Who are you listening to - the world or the Lord? Sometimes, the voice of the world seems to be so loud - so loud that we can hardly hear the voice of the Lord at all. We need to listen well if we are to hear the voice of the Lord in today’s world. When we are discouraged, we need His Word of encouragement: ‘The zeal of the Lord will do this’(31). When you feel like saying, ‘I can’t’, remember this: ‘Our God is able’- ‘able to help those who are tempted’, ‘able to provide you with every blessing in abundance’, ‘able to do far more abundantly than all we ask or think’(Daniel 3:17; Hebrews 2:18; 2 Corinthians 9:8; Ephesians 3:20). Don’t say ‘I can’t’. Say, ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthen me’(Philippians 4:13).

‘Let Us Run With Perseverance The Race That Is Set Before Us, Looking To Jesus.’

2 Kings 18:1-37
Hezekiah ‘held fast to the Lord; he did not depart from following Him…’(6). We give up so easily. We start well, then we lose our way. We don’t stick at it. Some people are all smiles - when things are going well. When the going gets tough, they lose their smiles - and you can’t see them for dust! What’s the problem? - They’ve taken their eyes off Jesus. They’re looking around at everyone and everything - except Jesus. Notice how different Hezekiah was! He ‘held fast to the Lord; he did not depart from following Him’. This is what makes the difference - Keeping your eyes on Jesus. What is it that keeps us going? We are ‘kept by the power of God’- He ‘is able to keep us from falling’(1 Peter 1:5; Jude 24). ‘Let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus’(Hebrews 12:1-2).

If You Don’t Have Salvation, You Have Nothing!

2 Kings 17:1-41
‘The people of Israel had sinned against the Lord their God, who had brought them up out of the land of Egypt’(7). What happens when people reject the God of salvation? - They become ‘empty’ and ‘worthless’ because they have chosen to ‘pursue emptiness’ by ‘following worthless idols’(15). If you don’t have salvation, you have nothing. Jesus makes this perfectly clear when He says, ‘What will it profit a man, if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? (Mark 8:36). You can have it all - all that the world thinks is important - and yet have nothing - nothing that really matters! The world has its ‘winners’. They have won ‘the praise of men’. We must be careful: ‘Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God’. It’s better to be ‘God’s friend’(James 4:4; 2:23)

Confess Your Sin And Trust In Christ.

2 Kings 15:23-16:20
Within every one of us, there is conflict. It is the conflict between good and evil (15:34,24,28; 16:2). Paul experienced this conflict: ‘I can will what is right, but I cannot do it. I don’t do the good I want to do. Instead, I do the evil that I don’t want to do… When I want to do right, evil lies close at hand’(Romans 7:18-19,21). What are we to do when we feel this conflict tearing us apart? We are to confess our sin- ‘Wretched man that I am!’. We are to trust in Christ- ‘Who will deliver me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!’(Romans 7:24-25). While we are in this earthly body, the conflict rages on. We ‘wait in patience for deliverance by the Lord’. When He returns, we will ‘rejoice in His salvation’(Lamentations 3:26; Isaiah 25:8-9; Hebrews 9:28).

Wisdom To Know God’s Will And Strength To Do God’s Will

2 Kings 14:17-15:22
Throughout life, we are faced with choices. Some of our choices are very important. Some are relatively unimportant. Everything can seem so complicated. Even the less important decisions appear to be very difficult. It’s very confusing. You wonder what to do. You don’t know which way to turn. In all of life’s decisions, there is no more important choice than this: What will I do - ‘evil in the eyes of the Lord’(14:24; 15:9,18) or ‘right in the eyes of the Lord? (15:3). You’re wondering what to do. You’re looking for guidance. Here’s a prayer you can pray: ‘Send your light and your truth. Let them guide me’(Psalm 43:3). Jesus is ‘the Light’ and ‘the Truth’(John 8:12; 14:6). Keep looking to Him, asking Him to be your Guide. He will give you wisdom to know God’s will and strength to do God’s will.

Pleasing God - Nothing Matters More Than This.

2 Kings 13:1-14:16
We love making comparisons. ‘This one’s better’. ‘That one’s better’. Some kings were better than others. What’s the difference between a bad king and a good king? It’s really very simple. The good king does what is ‘right in the eyes of the Lord’(14:3). The bad king does what is ‘evil in the eyes of the Lord’(13:11). This is not a matter of popularity. It is a matter of obedience. It’s possible to be popular among the people without being obedient to God. Obedience is more important than popularity. We must choose obedience - even when popularity doesn’t come into it. There is one King who stands head and shoulders above all other kings. Jesus Christ is ‘King of kings and Lord of lords’(Revelation 19:16). How does your life look ‘in the eyes of the Lord’? Pleasing Him - Nothing matters more than this.

Grudge Giving, Duty Giving And Thanksgiving

2 Kings 11:1-12:21
Let us ‘make a covenant’- to ‘be the Lord’s people’, to ‘do what is right in the eyes of the Lord’(11:17; 12:2). Part of this ‘covenant’ will involve our use of ‘money’. Real covenanting with the Lord will always mean much more than how much money we give to Him. Real giving is a matter of the heart: ‘the money which a man’s heart prompts him to bring into the House of the Lord’(12:4). ‘God loves a cheerful giver’(2 Corinthians 9:7). Our giving will only be cheerful when it comes from the heart. There are three types of giving: ‘Grudge giving’- ‘I have to’; ‘Duty giving’- ‘I ought to’; ‘Thanksgiving’- ‘I want to’. What kind of giver are you? This is an important question. Is it just ‘the Church always looking for money’? No! There is more: God wants us to give ourselves to Him.

New Life In The Son - A Time For Salvation (Ecclesiastes 3:1-14)

Here's a link to a sermon I preached recently.

I hope that God will bless you through the preaching of His Word.

Let God’s Word Search Your Heart.

2 Kings 10:1-36
Jehu was a proud man: ‘Come with me, and see my zeal for the Lord’(16). He was full of his own importance, a bit special, a bit out of the ordinary, a cut above the rest. God did not share Jehu’s opinion of himself - ‘Jehu was not careful to walk in the law of the Lord the God of Israel with all his heart…’(31). Jehu’s attitude was ‘I’m all right, Jack’. He didn’t bother to look too closely at himself. Let God’s Word search your heart: ‘The Word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword… discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart’(Hebrews 4:12). Let this be your prayer to the Lord: ‘Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!’(Psalm 139:24). Make sure that you mean it!

Some new posts at my “Christ in all the Scriptures” blog

‘Restore Us, O God; Let Thy Face Shine, That We May Be Saved!’

2 Kings 9:1-37
God’s judgment on Jezebel was awesome (30-37). Why does God’s Word speak to us so strongly of judgment? God is warning us. He is calling us to repent, to return to Him before it is too late, before our opportunity for repentance has gone. Make sure that you don’t reach the point of no return. ‘Seek the Lord while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near’(Isaiah 55:6). For you, this may be God’s time. The Lord may never be so ‘near’ again. You are in ‘the valley of decision’: ‘Today, when you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts’(Joel 3:14; Hebrews 4:7). There is still time - to open your heart to Christ, to trust Him as your Saviour, to become a new creation in Him. Here is a prayer you can pray: ‘Restore us, O God; let Thy face shine, that we may be saved!’(Psalm 80:3,7,19).

Be Faithful To God's Word - In Your Teaching, Hearing, Reading And Doing.

2 Kings 8:1-29
‘Go to meet the man of God and inquire of the Lord through him’(8). God’s servants, appointed by Him to serve the people in His Name, play a significant part in leading the people to a deeper knowledge of God. They bring the Word of God to the people. That is what they have been called to do. It is good to have faithful teaching from God’s Word. There needs also to be faithful hearing, reading and doing of God’s Word. God’s servants can take us so far - and no further. You can take a horse to the water, but you can’t make it drink! God’s servants say, ‘Here are ‘the wells of salvation’’. It is up to the people themselves to take the next step: ‘With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation’(Isaiah 12:3). God’s Word is provided for you. It is delivered to you. What are you doing with it?

"I Bring You Good News Of A Great Joy ... "

2 Kings 6:24-7:20
We read, in 7:2, of ‘windows in heaven’. Malachi 3:10 also speaks of ‘the windows in heaven’. Calling us to ‘bring the whole tithe (tenth)’to Him, God invites us to look to Him to ‘open the windows of heaven and pour down an overflowing blessing’. In 7:9, we read of ‘a day of good news’. What ‘a day of good news’ it will be when God ‘opens the windows of heaven and pours down an overflowing blessing.’ All of our days of good news come from the day of good news: ‘I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people; for to you is born this day… a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord’(Luke 2:10-11). ‘In Christ’, there is ‘every spiritual blessing’. God has given us so much. Let us give ourselves to Him: ‘Lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called’(Ephesians 1:3; 4:1).

"Love The Lord Your God ... Love Your Neighbour."

2 Kings 6:1-23
Elisha was ‘the man of God’(6,9,15). This was the important thing about him. More than anything else, he was ‘the man of God’. We find the same phrase in 1 Timothy 6:11 - ‘But as for you, man of God,… aim at righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness’. We are to be people who put first things first. There is nothing more important than this: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind’. Does this seem too heavenly-minded? Jesus also says, ‘Love your neighbour as you love yourself’(Luke 10:27). We are not to be super-spiritual. We are to be spiritually natural and naturally spiritual. Let there be no conflict between loving God and loving our neighbour. Christ is our Lord. We serve others for His sake (2 Corinthians 4:5).

‘The Blood Of Jesus Christ, God's Son, Cleanses Us From All Sin.’

2 Kings 5:1-27
How are we to receive God’s blessing? Are we to ‘do some great thing’? Are we to prove ourselves worthy of His blessing? No! The Word of God gives this simple instruction: ‘Wash and be clean’(13). Salvation is not something to be paid for or earned. It’s ‘the free gift of God in Jesus Christ our Lord’(Romans 6: 23). We don’t come to God, saying, ‘Look at me. Look at how good I am. Look at my religion. Look at my morality. You’ve got to bless me. I deserve it’. We come to Him, believing His Word- ‘the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin’- confessing our sins and trusting in His promise of forgiveness- ‘If we confess our sins, He forgives them and cleanses us from everything we’ve done wrong’(1 John 1:7,9). Forget about ‘doing some great thing’. Obey the command that really matters: ‘Wash and be clean’.

  • Make A New Beginning With God - Right Now!

    2 Kings 4:1-44
The situation seemed hopeless - ‘The child was lying dead on his bed’(32). What did Elisha do? - He ‘prayed to the Lord’(33). What are we to do when everything seems hopeless? Pray: ‘Restore us again, O God of our salvation… Will You not revive us again, that Your people may rejoice in You?’(Psalm 85:4,6). When we are at our lowest ebb, God is waiting to hear from us. Our prayer may not be eloquent - but it must come from the heart! Perhaps, we can hardly put our prayer into words. God looks beyond our inadequate words. He looks into our hearts. If, in our hearts, we are saying to Him, ‘Restore the joy of Your salvation to me, and provide me with a spirit of willing obedience’, He will hear and He will answer (Romans 8:26-27; Psalm 51:12). You can make a new beginning with God - right now!

God Is Planning For The Future.

    2 Kings 2:14-3:27
‘Where is the Lord, the God of Elijah?’(2:14). Elijah was no longer there - but God was still there! Don’t imagine that God goes away when there’s a change of ministry. While Elijah had been serving the Lord, Elisha was being prepared for his time. God is always one step ahead of us. We are living in the present day. He is planning for the future. With each succeeding generation, the question is asked, ‘Where is the Lord?’. In every generation, God is looking for those who will serve Him - ‘testifying of the Gospel of the grace of God, testifying of repentance to God and of faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, declaring the whole counsel of God’(Acts 20:24,21,27). This is ‘the mantle of Elijah’(2:14) - the mantle of prophetic ministry. Will you ‘take up the mantle’ for God and the next generation?

Taking Up The Mantle Of Prophetic Ministry

    2 Kings 1:1-2:13
‘He took up the mantle of Elijah’(2:13). Elijah’s ministry had ended. Elisha’s ministry was about to begin. It was the beginning of a new era. This may have been a new ministry. It was not, however, a new message. Both men preached the Word of the Lord. Elisha continued Elijah’s work. He took up where Elijah had left off. He brought the Word of the Lord to the people. Elisha was not exactly the same as Elijah. He was Elisha - not Elijah! There was, however, continuity. The second ministry built on the work done during the first ministry. The laying of the foundations - This is what Elijah’s ministry had been all about. Now, Elisha would build on this good foundation. He would take the work of God forward. Into the future, on to the second stage - This is what Elisha’s ministry was all about.

Let Us Pray, 'Our Father In heaven… Your Will Be Done.'

    1 Kings 22:15-53
Ahab’s repentance (21:27) didn’t last long! He continued to live in sin (22:8). He died in shame (37-38). Ahab’s son - Ahaziah - was just like his father - ‘a chip off the old block’: ‘He … provoked the Lord, the God of Israel to anger in every way that his father had done’(51-53). Jehoshapat was a different type of king - ‘he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord’(43). Here, we catch a glimpse of our Lord Jesus Christ - ‘I do as the Father commanded Me’(John 14:31). Don’t be like Ahaziah -‘he walked in the ways of his father… the ways of sin’(52). Let’s be like Jesus - Walking in the ways of our Heavenly Father. God says to us, ‘This is the way; walk in it’(Isaiah 30:21). Let us say, ‘As for God, His way is perfect’(2 Samuel 22:31). Let us pray, 'Our Father in heaven… Your will be done' (Matthew 6:9-10).

‘I Did Not Shrink From Declaring To You The Whole Counsel Of God.’

    1 Kings 21:1-22:14
We read of human sin and divine judgment (21:1-4,15-16,20-24). There is also something else here: the mercy of God - ‘Because he has humbled himself before Me, I will not bring the evil in his days…’(29). The judgment of God will come - but not yet. It is held back by the mercy of God. We live in confusing times. There is much evidence of sin. There are some signs of repentance. What are the servants of the Lord to say? Is there a single message, a Word of judgment, a Word of mercy? Here is what we must say: ‘What the Lord says to me, that I will speak’(22:14). Let us not settle for a one-sided message - preaching judgment without a glimmer of hope, promising mercy without issuing the Gospel warning. May God help us to be like Paul: ‘I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole counsel of God’(Acts 20:27).

Our Strength Is Not In Ourselves. It Is In The Lord.

    1 Kings 20:1-43
Sometimes we say, ‘I can’t’, when we mean, ‘I won’t’! We are ‘busy here and there’- too busy for God, for doing His will, for obeying His Word. Is this a case of ‘I can’t’? No! It is ‘I won’t’. We choose. We decide how we will use our time. God looks at our life. He sees what is most important to us and He says, ‘You yourself have decided it’. He sees that our choices have been self-centred rather than Christ-centred. He says, ‘So shall your judgment be’(40). Can we change? Yes! God says, ‘Come, strengthen yourself, and consider well what you have to do’(12). There is a decision to be made. We must be obedient to God’s Word: ‘Be strong in the Lord’ (Ephesians 6:10). Our strength is not in ourselves. It is in the Lord. Wait on the Lord and renew your strength (Isaiah 40:31). ‘Strengthen yourself’- in the Lord.
